The Morning After: Skin Recovery

Nicola ReedBy Nicola Reed 4 weeks ago

Gentle and boring beats clever the morning after, and the single best move happens the night before.

The morning after, keep it gentle and boring. Take the makeup off, use a mild cleanser, put on more moisturiser than usual, and leave your skin alone otherwise. The urge to scrub, mask and exfoliate your way back to normal is the thing that makes the next two days worse.

Skin looks flat and feels tight after a long night mostly because of a warm room, a late night and a face full of makeup left on too long. All three are fixed with time and mild products, not with effort.

The Night Before Is the Real Fix

Everything is easier if you take your makeup off before bed, and the way to make that happen is to make it take thirty seconds rather than five minutes.

Leave a cleansing balm and a flannel on the side before you go out, or a packet of wipes if that is what will actually get used. A quick job done at two in the morning beats a proper job you skip entirely.

A slick of lip balm and a glass of water next to the bed takes another ten seconds and you will be glad of both.

What It Costs

This is one of the cheapest routines going, because the whole point is fewer products rather than more. Around ten to twenty pounds from a high street chemist covers everything if you are starting from nothing.

  • A gentle cleanser, cream or balm rather than a foaming one.
  • A plain moisturiser with nothing active in it. Boring is the requirement, not a compromise.
  • A decent lip balm, which is the item you will be most grateful for.

You do not need a recovery mask, an eye gadget or anything sold specifically for the morning after. If you buy one thing, buy the balm cleanser, because it does the job in one pass when you are half asleep.

If You Slept In Your Makeup

It happens, and it is not a disaster. Do not attack it.

Cleanse once with a balm or oil worked into dry skin, take it off with a warm flannel, then cleanse a second time. Two mild passes remove far more than one aggressive one and leave your face feeling comfortable rather than stripped.

Pay attention to the lash line, where most of it will still be sitting. A cotton bud with a little balm on it clears the corners without rubbing at your eyes.

Gentle, Not Punishing

Today is not the day for an exfoliant, a strong acid, a clay mask or anything that tingles. Tight, dull skin does not need to be taken down another layer.

What it wants is moisturiser, applied to slightly damp skin and reapplied at lunchtime if it still feels tight. That is genuinely the whole plan.

If your face feels warm and looks a bit red from a warm room and a late night, cool water and time will sort it. Leave the clever products until you are back to normal.

Looking Presentable Today

If you have to be somewhere, go lighter than usual rather than heavier.

  • Skip powder almost entirely. It clings to dry patches and makes them obvious.
  • Cream blush high on the cheeks instead of a bronzer you have to work at.
  • Curled lashes and mascara on the top only.
  • A tinted balm rather than a matte lip, which will find every dry bit.

Sunglasses are entirely acceptable and always have been.

Hair and the Rest of It

Hair holds smoke, heat and hairspray, so a proper wash makes you feel human faster than anything you do to your face. If you cannot face it, tie it back and wash it tonight.

A warm shower, clean clothes and brushing your teeth twice is not a beauty routine, but on this particular morning it does more than any product on the shelf.

Eating and Drinking

Have water within reach all morning and drink it steadily rather than in one go. Have a proper breakfast rather than nothing, even if it is late and small.

You will feel better for both, and you will stop reaching for the products, which is exactly the right instinct. Most of what looks wrong this morning is tiredness, and tiredness responds to rest and food rather than to skincare.

Plan the Day Around It

If you know a long Saturday is coming, keep the Sunday clear or nearly clear. Nothing that needs an early start, nothing that needs you to look your best.

Set the cleansing balm out before you leave for Dreamworx, put a bottle of water by the bed, and give yourself permission to do very little the next day. That plan works better than any morning-after routine, and it costs nothing at all.
