Festival Beauty Past the Camping Stage

Nicola ReedBy Nicola Reed 4 weeks ago

Once you are going home to your own bed, the whole plan changes and gets a great deal easier.

Once you are not camping, festival beauty stops being about survival and starts being about weather. You have a mirror, a shower and your own bed at the end of it, so the whole plan comes down to three things: something that holds up in real daylight, sun protection you will actually reapply, and hair that copes with wind.

That is a much easier brief than the one you were working to at twenty three, and it means you can wear more or less what you like as long as it is applied to stay put.

What Changes When You Are Not Camping

You get to start clean, which solves most of it. You are not rationing wipes or doing your eyes in a wing mirror. You can do a proper base at home and carry almost nothing.

What replaces the old problems is exposure. Six or eight hours of wind, changing light and standing up. That is a different kind of test and it rewards preparation rather than a big bag.

What You'll Spend

Not much, because most of this is what you already own applied differently. If you are buying, two or three items cover it and something in the region of twenty to thirty pounds from a high street chemist is realistic.

  • A sunscreen you genuinely like wearing on your face. The one you like is the one you will put back on.
  • A waterproof mascara, even if you never usually bother with one.
  • A long-wear lip product, or a plain balm if you would rather not think about your mouth all day.

Skip the travel-sized everything. You are going home tonight. If you buy one thing, buy the sunscreen, because outdoors in real light it is the item that changes how the whole day feels.

The Base for a Whole Day Outdoors

Go lighter than you would for a night out. Daylight is unforgiving about heavy coverage in a way a dark room never is, and a lighter base also stays put better when the weather moves around.

Sunscreen first, then a tinted moisturiser or a thin foundation, then powder only where you get shiny. Give the sunscreen a few minutes to settle before anything goes over it, or it will pill.

Cream blush over foundation and under powder holds better outdoors than a powder blush, which tends to disappear by mid-afternoon.

Sun, Wind and Real Light

Reapply sunscreen at some point in the afternoon. A stick or a spray designed for over makeup makes this a ten second job rather than a redo of your face.

Wind is the one people forget. It dries lips, moves hair into lip gloss and makes eyes water, which is exactly why waterproof mascara earns its place. A balm in your pocket handles the rest.

Sunglasses will flatten anything clever you do around the eyes, so keep eye makeup simple and put the effort into skin and lips.

Hair That Copes With Weather

Anything down and loose will be in your face by the second hour. Plan for up, or plan for tied back and accept that it is going to move.

  • Braids and plaits hold through wind better than anything else and look better as they loosen.
  • A claw clip lets you change your mind halfway through the day.
  • Two grips crossed into an X hold a front section far better than two side by side.
  • Carry one spare hair tie and nothing else.

Skip a big blow-dry beforehand. It will not survive, and you will have spent an hour on it for nothing.

The Bag You Can Carry All Day

Small, across the body, and light. You will be standing up for most of the day and holding a big bag is genuinely miserable by hour five.

Sunscreen, balm, blotting papers, your lip product, a hair tie and painkillers. That covers nearly everything that goes wrong. Leave your foundation at home, because topping up foundation over a long day outdoors is how a good base goes patchy.

Field to Evening in Five Minutes

If you are going on somewhere, do not start again. Blot the shine, press powder in rather than sweeping it, redo your lips and put your hair up if it has been down. That is a different look in five minutes without a mirror worth speaking of.

A darker lip is the fastest way to move a daytime face into an evening one, which is the same trick that works for daytime clubbing at Dreamworx when you carry on afterwards.

What Not To Bother With

False lashes in wind. Heavy contour in daylight. Loose glitter with no glue under it. A full set of nails done the day before that you will chip on a fence.

None of it survives, and none of it is what makes the day. You are there for the music and for the ten seconds when a flashback, our word for an older track, drops and everyone around you loses it. Dress for that, not for the photos.
