Who is Rozalla

Rozalla – born Rozalla Miller on 18 March 1964 in Zambia – is a singer best known for the early-1990s dance anthems “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)” and “Are You Ready To Fly”, tracks that are still played decades on.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Rozalla began performing at a young age in her native Zambia, singing in clubs and at events, and by age 13 she was appearing on a children’s TV show. As a teenager, she moved with her family to Zimbabwe, her father’s country of origin, where she fronted various R&B cover bands before starting her own recording career, scoring five number-one hits on the Zimbabwean chart. In 1988, she relocated to London with her manager Chris Sergeant and began working with production duo Band of Gypsies (Nigel Swanston and Tim Cox).

Chart Success

Rozalla’s first UK single, “Born to Luv Ya”, became a club hit in 1990, but her career took off in 1991 with “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)”, which reached number 6 in the UK Singles Chart, became a Top 10 hit across Europe, and made the Billboard Top 40 in the US the following year. It remains her biggest hit and featured on her debut album, Everybody’s Free, which peaked at number 20 in the UK Albums Chart and went silver. The album also produced the hits “Faith (In the Power of Love)” and “Are You Ready to Fly”, which reached number 11 and 14 respectively in the UK Singles Chart. In December 2016, Rozalla was ranked the 98th most successful dance artist of all time.

A Lasting Career

In 1992, Rozalla toured with Michael Jackson, opening shows on the European leg of his Dangerous tour, including UK dates. She went on to enjoy further UK Top 40 hits in 1994/95, including her rendition of “I Love Music”, the theme song to the film Carlito’s Way, and released further albums including Look No Further, Coming Home and Brand New Version, the latter recorded under her full name Rozalla Miller. Her music has continued to find new audiences through remixes and reissues, including a 2009 Global Deejays remix of “Everybody’s Free” that reached number 7 in Australia after being used as the theme to So You Think You Can Dance, and a 2015 return to the Billboard Club Dance Charts Top 10 with “If You Say It Again”.
