The theme park is split into 8 themed areas, the zoo is included with your park admission and holds over 140 species, and if you want to stay longer there's a full holiday resort with lodges, camping and a leisure complex. It's been run by the Gibbs family since 1978.

What It Costs

Ticket prices depend on how far ahead you book, so it's worth planning. In the main season:

• Standard ticket: £46 booked 7 or more days ahead, £51.50 booked 2 to 7 days ahead, £58 at the gate.
• Family ticket (up to 4 people, all aged 4+): £168 in advance, £194 mid, £224 at the gate.
• Seniors (65+): £36.75 in advance, £40 mid, £45.25 at the gate.
• Children aged 3 and under: free (proof of age may be asked for).
• Registered disabled carers go free; disabled guests pay the standard price.
• Low season tickets are cheaper, roughly £23 to £30.
• Groups of 25 or more can get a quote from the sales team.

Opening Times

The park opens at 10am. Closing time varies by day and by season, often around 5pm for the theme park, with the zoo usually staying open a little later, often 6pm. Free Parking

Parking is free and included with every ticket, so it's not an extra cost to budget for. The car parks are within a 5-minute walk of the main entrance.

A Taster of the Rides

Rides are grouped by minimum height, so it's easy to work out what suits your children now. Even shorter children have plenty to do, since many family and kids' rides let a smaller child ride alongside a paying adult.

• Thrill rides (minimum height to ride alone): Velocity and Sik at 1.4m, Cliff Hanger at 1.32m, Kumali at 1.3m, Hero at 1.27m, and Mumbo Jumbo, Pterodactyl and Navigator all at 1.22m.
• Family rides: Flamingo 1 needs 1.3m alone or 0.91m with an adult, Voodoo needs 1.22m alone or 1.06m with an adult, and Zooom is 1.07m, whether alone or with an adult.
• Kids and little ones: Frog Hopper from 0.9m, Runaway Train from 1.04m, and the Jungle Carousel from 1.07m if riding below the elephant or tea cup.

A Taster of the Zoo

Zoo entry is included with your park ticket, no extra charge. There are over 140 species of mammals, reptiles and birds, including tigers from South East Asia, giraffes from sub-Saharan Africa, and penguins at Penguin Coast, a newer penguin pool. The Muddy Duck Farm collection is a good stop with younger children. Through the day there are keeper talks and handling sessions, a Be A Zoo Keeper experience, Animal Encounters and Zoo Trails to follow. Flamingo Land also runs international breeding programmes for endangered species, including support for the Udzungwa Forest project in Tanzania.

If your children want to get properly close to an animal, the Giraffe Encounter is a paid extra on top of admission: you hand-feed the giraffes with a hoofstock keeper, next to the white rhino enclosure. It costs £50, includes a giraffe plush toy and a certificate, and needs booking at least 24 hours ahead. The minimum age is 8, and under-12s must be with a paying adult (18+). It's outdoors, so sensible footwear and waterproofs are worth packing.

Staying Longer: The Resort

Because Flamingo Land is a holiday resort as well as a park and zoo, you can turn a day trip into a break. Getting There

Flamingo Land is at Kirby Misperton, near Malton, North Yorkshire, YO17 6UX. Parking is free and close to the entrance if you're driving. By train, the nearest station is Malton, about 4 miles away, from where you can pick up a taxi or local bus, including the Coastliner 840 which serves Malton, York and Leeds.
